Last night we took a walk up to a viewpoint high on one of Lisbon’s many hills to catch the view around sunset. We walked up through Alfama – an old part of town with a maze of narrow streets, walkways and many, many stairs. Alfama is definitely the most confusing “old town” labyrinth of streets we’ve encountered after 3 months in Europe.
As you get towards the top the slope starts to level out and flattens at one of the wider streets that curves along the crest of the hill. Tuk-tuks ferry around tourists and cars dart around a parked yellow streetcar picking up passengers. People gather at one of the many Miradouros (viewpoints) with bottles of wine and beer to take it all in.
