It’s fair to say we’ve encountered a variety of exotic foods. From bustling night markets in Thailand, hawker stalls in Penang, Malaysia and the octopus aisle at our Greek grocer in Paros, there’s little we haven’t seen.
That said, nothing could have prepared us for probably the most unconventional snack offered at the Central Market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia: Fried Tarantulas. The strangest thing was that these large, hairy, fried spiders were very inconspicuously placed next to some of the regular foods you’d expect to find in a Southeast Asian market (grilled bananas, grasshoppers, durian, etc..). We’re adventurous, but needless to say we weren’t brave enough to try this local Cambodian delicacy.
